Our History
Mr. Walter Sylvester Sanders, Jr., a chosen servant, a good shepherd, and an astute businessman, was very involved in the professional, civic and social aspects of his community. Always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, he led by example.
He began his professional career in 1941, and became a licensed funeral director in 1949. He served the Walter Sanders Funeral Home and community families until his death in 1993.
Walter Sanders, Jr. was married to the lovely Dollie McNeill Sanders and together they had one daughter, Sandra Sanders Meachem. Sandra is committed to maintaining integrity, honesty, and a superior service to all families served.
Our Present
Sandra Sanders Meachem, along with her husband, Frank Meachem assumed the operations of the Walter Sanders Funeral & Creamation Services in 1993, after the death of her father, Walter Sanders Jr. With the assistance of her uncle, Elias Sanders in 1993 the Walter Sanders Funeral Home, continued to thrive. In 2010, Sandra and Frank invited Tony Nixon, a cousin to join the organization and assist with the continued growth of Walter Sanders Funeral & Cremation Services. Together the team is poised to continue the legacy and tradition of outstanding service to the community.

In our business, in particular, it also requires a great deal of confidentiality, kindness, compassion and attention to detail. Sandra Sanders-Meachem
Sandra Sanders-Meachem graduated from Bennett College in 1970, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology. Sandra also received a Masters at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Greensboro, NC.
Sandra has been involved in the Funeral Business her entire life being the daughter of the founder Walter Sanders Jr. After the death of her father, Walter Sanders Jr., she assumed full responsibility for the business in keeping with her father’s legacy.
She has always supported organizations and activities within the Johnston County community and surrounding areas. Sandra and her husband Frank have three daughters and six grandchildren.
Frank Meachem
Frank Meachem graduated from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University with a degree in Sociology and Economics. He completed further study in Guidance & Counseling. He currently serves as Business Manager and Licensed Funeral Director of Walter Sanders Funeral & Cremation Services and is actively involved in the religious, civic and social activities of the community.
Tony D. Nixon
Tony D. Nixon grew up in Smithfield, NC. He attended Tennessee State University in Nashville, TN, where he earned his degree in Business Management. Tony has managed several large corporations and has worked diligently in the community. He is active with church, civic and social organizations. Sandra’s cousin,Tony became a Licensed Funeral Director in 2011 and is currently serving as Manager of Operations for Walter Sanders Funeral & Cremation Services Tony is committed to maintaining integrity, honesty, and a superior service to all families served. Tony and his wife Tracy have two daughters, Kiara(Kendrick) and Kimaya four grandchildren Karmein, Kennedy, Kai and Kameron.
