On December 6, 1973, God blessed Alonza Lee and Betty Jean Dublin Lee with a handsome son named Marlon Alonza Lee. He was raised in the Belmont community of East Smithfield, where his roots ran deep. A proud product of the Johnston County Public School System, Marlon graduated from Smithfield-Selma High School (SSS) Class of 1992, where he played for the Spartans Basketball Team. He began his college journey at North Carolina A&T State University. Eventually, he transferred to St. Augustine’s University in Raleigh, NC, thanks to a basketball scholarship from his cousin and mentor, Norvell Lee. He graduated in 1999 with a degree in Business Education and a minor in Marketing.
After a brief time in Atlanta, GA, Marlon returned to Smithfield and found his true calling: educating and mentoring young people. Marlon was one who would help anyone if he could. Known affectionately as “Mr. 6’9,” he stood firmly for justice and the well-being of others. This principle was instilled in him by his father early in life that "if it’s good with you, think on others.” Marlon indeed thought on others as he made a difference in his community and in the lives of every child that he came in contact with. In 2001, he joined Clayton High School as a math teacher. Over the years, he wore many hats: Student Advocate, Girls Volleyball Coach, Assistant Athletic Director, and Dean of Students.
As a staunch advocate for justice, Marlon took a bold step to become a voice for the residents of East Smithfield. In 2013, he was elected as the Town Council representative for East Smithfield, where he championed initiatives such as the development of a community park, where he always gave back to the community in events such as Back to School, Easter, Christmas Toy Distribution, Youth Summer Camp, the Smith Collins Park Juneteenth Celebration, the revitalization of the Sarah Yard Center, and the recognition of local legends through street and other dedications. Marlon was an active member of St. Peters Church of Christ (DOC) in Smithfield, NC under the leadership of Bishop Richard Johnson. Marlon was involved in various organizations in the life of the church.
Family was everything to Marlon, he leaves to cherish is memories with: his loving parents, Alonza Lee and Betty Jean Dublin Lee, his loving daughter, Y’Zana Lee Randle of the home; his son, Spencer Carlyle Blackwell of Burlington, NC; his sister, Kimberly Lee Lane (David) of the home; special cousins, Sheerie Dublin-Robinson (Danny) of Smithfield, NC, and Carlos Dublin (Nancy) of Lorton, VA; uncles, Leon Dublin of South Carolina, Jay Britt (Vivian), Wayman Britt (Dina), Jimmy Britt, all of Michigan, and William McDaniel of Smithfield; his aunt, Abrilla Robinson of Smithfield, NC; his loyal four-legged nephew, “Buddy;” a host of cousins, extended family, Brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi, former students and athletes, colleagues, classmates, friends, and an entire community whose lives he touched.

Message: At the early May town council meeting in Smithfield, N.C., I saw Marlon Lee and a older man with a white hair ponytail. I told Marlon Lee I loved him and he said he loved me, too, then I said to the man standing with Marlon, AND, he is a friend of my brother's, too! As I promised last year at Juneteeth, when Wingate Lassiter's The Smithfield Weekly Sun covered the Juneteeth parade, I said I'd always be there, Marlon said it takes all of us to get through this mess. I remember when Marlon Lee was a groomsman in my dear youngest brother Will's wedding in PA. I was a bridesmaid, and we had fun. Marlon Lee had a big,huge heart as a child and same he was as an adult. Marlon Lee was a CHRISTIAN, and he was a good man. I have a hole in my heart but will keep fighting the good fight for our lifelong childhood friend. I hope the family is resting their hearts, and I am praying for you during this extremely painful time. I am so very deeply sorry for your tragic loss. Wish there was something I could do to bring Marlon Lee back. We need him here, Like Jesus Christ, in Matthew 4:20. when the disciples said NO, Jesus Christ said "Get away from me, Satan," this was God's plan. My mother and I are deeply saddened to learn of Marlon passing. We will remember him for the very selfless person that he was. Marlon will also be fondly remembered for bringing treats to my mom during various holidays from Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. We both looked forward to seeing him and we will truly miss that. Marlon always gave of himself so freely and the Smithfield community has been rewarded! I know God welcomed Marlon home saying, “Well done thy good and faithful servant.” A good and faithful servant he was and may the family be comforted in knowing that Marlon exemplified this so very well!!
