Mrs Jessie Mae "Chick" Horton Joyner
Mrs. Jessie Mae “Chick” Horton Joyner, 93, of Kenly, departed this life on June 13, 2023 at her daughter’s home in Selma, NC. She was the daughter of the late Lewis H. Horton and the late Addie Gertrude Pearce Horton. Her husband was the late Rudolph Joyner.
A lifelong Kenly resident, Chick began her career as an educator as a librarian and substitute teacher in Johnston County. However, she would retire from the Nash County Public School System, having worked at South Nash, Middlesex, and Bailey elementary schools.
She leaves to cherish her memories: Annette Joyner Moore (Billy), Kenly, NC; Vanessa Denise Joyner Bennett (Eric), Selma, NC; and stepdaughter, Laverne Staggers, Wilson, NC; four grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Public viewing and visitation will take place from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Saturday, June 17, 2023 and her celebration of life at 4:00 pm on Sunday, June 18, 2023. Both will be at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 300 N. Gardner Avenue, Kenly, NC. Services will be streamed via the funeral home Facebook page.

I had so much fun going to her house, talking to her, watching her cook, laughing at her... the list goes on! There was NEVER a dull moment with Miss Chick - not once in my youth, my teens, my twenties or my thirties!

What a mighty God we serve. Aunt chick for my mother Clara Lee Pearce Shaw ( family) was the last serving Elder. According to scripture she lived on God's timing. A very sad loss for me but a victory won through Christ. I'm reminded of Aunt chick faithfulness in education, a dedicated wife and mother, and friend to those that knew her. I'm reminded as a child the correction that was given by aunt chick when mother wasn't around. Life has changed. Women of our mother's standards doesn't exist anymore. Well they paved the path to a solid life style for many. The correction lives on. Denise thank you for caring for your mother. Hats off to you for being her baby but yet a well groomed woman. I'm very proud of you. Annette the torch is passed to you. Lead your entire family to Christ. Tell them the wages of sin is death and the gift of God is eternal life. Choose Christ for these are perilous times. I charge the entire family to keep God first place. Rejoice in the Lord knowing that nothing belongs to us. Keep love in your hearts. Keep loving in your actions towards one another. Give thanks to God for he knows all purposes. A salute to Aunt chick. Never to be forgotten. Love all of you.
