Elmo Archibald, Jr of Smithfield, NC, passed away on Thursday, February 25th at Johnston Health Hospital at the precious age of 84.
He was born on February 15, 1937 to Elmo Archibald Sr and Louiza (Price) Archibald. He was the baby boy, affectionally called “little boy” in a loving family of 9 children. Although times were hard, the mainstays of the family were laughter, a whole lot of love and mom’s unparalleled cooking. These are the foundations that Elmo embedded in his own family. A lover of school and a member of the drama club, Elmo graduated from Johnston County Training School in 1957. He pursued his ambition of being a carpenter after graduation and, with his family, built his own home at 2173 Packing Plant Road which remains the family homestead.
Elmo was a man whose loving nature and warm demeanor left an indelible impression on anyone fortunate enough to meet him. With his words, he commanded obedience, with his smile and laughter he lit up a room, with his hug he shared the love of a father. He was a dedicated Christian and member of Galilee Baptist Church, serving over 40 years as Superintendent of the Sunday School, 15+ years as a Deacon of the Church; he was a trustee, a member of the choir, finance ministry, and the list goes on.
Preceding him in death was his wife, Mary Elizabeth McClamb Archibald and his daughter Pamela Devaugh Archibald. He leaves to mourn his children, Carmen Archibald, Sharon Archibald, Jennifer Archibald Ray, (son-in-law Vincent Ray) and Cornelius Archibald; 12 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren, and a host of other family members and friends.
