Joseph attended Johnston County Training School, (J.C.T.S.). He was a smart, funny, sometimes stubborn and a real character. He loved playing basketball in his early years and in later years  enjoyed watching sports and spending time with the family. If you needed a quote he had a ton of them. 

     Joseph was married to Hattie " Ruth" Smith and remained married until her death in 2002. Joseph leaves to mourn his death sons; Ricky F. Smith, Dewayne (Jessica) Smith, daughters; Katrina Sanders, Detrich Smith, Delores (Josh Hamer) Smith, Rochell Johnson, one sister; Barbara Sanders and numerous grandchildren, great grand-children and great great grand-children, along with a host of other relatives and freinds. His grandchildren loved spending time with him and he often would come around them with treats. He will be greatly missed by the entire family.

     A Memorial Service in his honor is scheduled for Wednesday Nov 23, 2022 at the Walter Sanders Funeral & Cremation Services Chapel 302 S. Bright Leaf Blvd., Smithfield, NC 27577 from 12:00 noon until 1:00 pm .
